A CASE STUDY BY LESLIE HINTON

Location Managers Guild International

The Client

I had the opportunity to work with Location Managers Guild International—a nonprofit organization of location managers, scouts, assistants, and affiliated businesses who serve the global film and television industry through creative, educational, and philanthropic programs.

Scope

The best among them are seasoned creatives, capable of reading a script and bringing it to life with vivid imagery. Yet few truly understood the critical role they played. The design challenge, therefore, was to communicate both the value and the impact of their work as they expanded their membership, rebranded, and launched the LMGI Awards.

The Challenge

Their goal was to educate both the industry and the public about the vital, yet often misunderstood, work they do in film, television, and print. Many people assumed they were simply a group of corporate “managers,” performing administrative tasks. But in reality, they are a vibrant creative team—intrepid explorers and photographers—who are often among the first consulted by directors and producers to help shape the visual tone of a film.

The Solution

For their annual event, I designed a stunning emblem which featured a compass rose that represents the spirit of discovery that defines their work. This emblem not only graced the event awards but also became the centerpiece of The Compass—their monthly magazine featuring in-depth articles on the film industry and the invaluable contributions of location managers and scouts.

I crafted a captivating 12-month promotional calendar that was distributed to film industry professionals. Featuring breathtaking photography, the calendar showcased the remarkable creative talent of the organization’s members. The sheer visual impact of the images inspired us to highlight as many photographs as possible—putting their artistry front and center.

I helped to promote their photo exhibit which highlighted the artistic vision of their location professionals in the heart of Los Angeles. In addition, I developed a series of posters with bold typography and vivid imagery, along with brochures and other promotional materials designed to inspire and attract new members—helping to grow the organization’s reach and influence within the industry.

TESTIMONIAL

"Leslie has truly raised the bar on every advertisement, brochure or other project we've collaborated on. She has a great visual style and intuitively captures the feel of what I'm looking for - even if I'm not so great at expressing it verbally. And then she comes back with something that is visually stunning and totally on target. I highly, highly recommend working with her for any and all of your graphic needs!"

I crafted a visually compelling campaign that showcased the creative brilliance of location professionals  across the globe.

Overall, the project was a success, and I’ve had the privilege of working with LMGI as a creative partner for over a decade—from their very first event, “Greening Hollywood,” which educated members on making film sets more eco-friendly, to the launch of their own LMGI Awards show, celebrating the outstanding work of their members. I’ve watched them grow from serving U.S.-based professionals to expanding internationally and building a continually growing roster of members—and I am proud to have contributed to their journey.
